Grieving is often described as an individual, personal experience; however, it is also inherently interpersonal. Considering individuals within the relational context of their family unit is integral for professionals working with the bereaved (Breen et al., 2018), especially after the loss of a family member. This webinar will use research findings on the relational aspects of family bereavement after child loss (Bartel, 2016; 2019) to offer insight and guidance for mental health professionals.
Grief presents unique emotional and physical experiences for every individual, and these occur within a distinct social network. Since families include many different sub-relationships, the death of a family member leads to a complex, multilayered dynamic grieving process. Not only do the family members grieve the loss individually; they also grieve together in a variety of ways. Research findings will be presented describing the family grieving process in terms of the transformation of relationships in the family system that result from the death of a family member. Results suggest that by turning towards the loss, individually and with other members of the family, grievers are able to begin to navigate a new way of being as a family. Learning to be a family again can include revised roles and rules, ongoing connection through rituals and remembrances, as well as allowance for different ways of expressing grief. This webinar highlights the intricacies and nuances of family bereavement fostering an understanding among clinicians of the shared, relational, and interactive dimensions of grieving within a family system. Specific techniques and clinical practice tools will be presented to mental health professional working with bereaved families. A case study will illustrate how families grieve and the way in which clinicians can work with grieving families.
Learning Objectives:
- To understand the intricacies and nuances of family bereavement, and recognize it as a shared, relational, interactive process.
- To identify relational factors in working with a bereaved family through a case study.
- To explore interventions and techniques for working with bereaved family members.
