The field of grief has been burgeoning in recent decades. Advances in empirical research have led to greater awareness of the range of challenges and complications confronted by the bereaved. A chronic and clinically-significant form of severe grief referred to as Complicated Grief or Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) has been included as a mental health diagnosis in the DSM-5-TR and the ICD-11. This form of grief has been distinguished from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, both of which can be diagnosed in the aftermath of bereavement. At the same time, a wide range of well-established therapy interventions and techniques are now available. This webinar will provide an overview of the distinctions among mental health complications faced by grievers, chiefly PGD, depression, and PTSD, with an emphasis on how each of these complications might inform grief therapy. The webinar will also summarize the multitude of factors that shape the severity of grief, particularly the circumstances of death, the griever’s relationship with the deceased, the sociocultural context of grief, and the characteristics of the griever. Dr. Milman will highlight differences in how professionals can target these key factors in the effort to tailor therapy to each individual griever. This discussion will include controversies surrounding the medicalization of grief. Specific techniques will be presented with written therapy excerpts, focusing on working with continuing bonds and unfinished business in clinical settings.

About the Presenter:

Dr. Evgenia (Jane) Milman, PhD, is a licensed psychologist as well as an educator and researcher. She is a Post Doctoral Fellow at the Department of Psychology in Western University and a faculty member at the Portland Institute for Loss and Transition. Dr. Milman publishes research examining how making meaning of difficult life experiences influences mental health following grief, trauma and other stressful events. She has authored dozens of research publications as well as book chapters on grief and grief therapy, most recently collaborating with Drs. Edith Steffen and Robert Neimeyer to develop the Handbook of Grief Therapies for Sage Publications. Dr. Milman also actively practices psychology, is a content expert and writer for the Canadian Virtual Hospice and is honored to serve on the advisory board for TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors).
