This webinar explores living losses that occur in the context of mis-attuned, neglectful, or adverse childhood experiences with primary caregivers. Contemporary non-death grief models will be presented, introducing the concepts of tangible and intangible loss, ambiguous loss, and non-finite loss to provide a framework for exploring complex family dynamics, past experiences in childhood, reoccurring interpersonal patterns, and other relevant life transitions that influence grief associated with difficult childhood experiences. This presentation will describe way to support individuals through the process of consciously attending to grief of such significant living losses from childhood as a central component of restorative grief therapy. When we are not able to grieve, we often become immobilized, overwhelmed, and can feel stuck. This presentation will bridge contemporary grief therapy with attachment responsive and trauma informed psychodynamic therapy. Ultimately, this webinar will outline how a deeper sense of connection with oneself and others is possible, even in a world of change, loss, and uncertainty. Practical approaches for supporting adults in grieving their childhoods in a way that is congruent with their needs, values, and overall life situations will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
1. Develop greater awareness around the significance of non-death losses associated with a difficult childhood.
2. Recognize the intersection between living losses and attachment wounding.
3. Identify practical approaches for supporting adults in grieving their childhoods.
