Description:
Knowledge of approaches to LGBTQIA+ inclusive and affirming care is essential to providing high quality end-of-life and bereavement care. LGBTQIA+ individuals, caregivers, and families face substantial health and healthcare disparities connected to numerous factors, including overt discrimination, lack of access to affirming care, bias in clinicians and institutions, and personal and collective trauma(s). At the same time, LGBTQIA+ communities show resilience and coping resources that often go under-recognized but are vital to honor and bolster at end-of-life. Drawing on queer theory, critical disability studies, existing research, and research being conducted by the presenter, this webinar will provide an overview of key considerations for clinicians regarding LGBTQIA+ affirming and inclusive end-of-life and bereavement care. Historical, systemic, structural, and cultural factors that have contributed to disparities and inadequate care for LGBTQIA+ individuals will be outlined and used to contextualize care recommendations. Essential points concerning LGBTQIA+ needs and experiences in end-of-life care and bereavement support will be described and illustrated by case examples. Guidance on terms, concepts, and suggested affirming assessment prompts will be provided. Concepts of disenfranchised grief, intersectionality within the LGBTQIA+ community, and queer theory as it relates to relationality and family in the end-of-life context will be applied throughout. Finally, the presentation will communicate ways in which care for this population of patients and grievers can continue to be improved. Ultimately, this presentation will aim to empower clinicians to provide affirming end-of-life care through bereavement to LGBTQIA+ patients and their chosen families in the context of systemic and structural barriers.
