Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) was recently included as a diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5-TR). Although the DSM provides clear guidance for diagnosing prolonged grief disorder, it provides little insight into the nature of prolonged grief disorder. That is, it does not specify precisely what kind of a thing prolonged grief disorder (or any other mental disorder) really is. In this webinar, we will consider different perspectives on what kind of thing mental disorders are and the implications these perspectives have for how we understand and treat prolonged grief. We will focus especially on recent work arguing that prolonged grief disorder is best understood, not as a disease entity or psychobiological dysfunction, but as the product of a complex system of interacting biological, psychological, and social components. From this perspective, the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors identified by the DSM as “symptoms” of prolonged grief disorder take on new importance. Rather than being passive indicators of an underlying disorder, these experiences are instead better understood as components of the biopsychosocial system that gives rise to prolonged grief. We will consider the three core implications of this conceptual framework. First, we will review its implications for how we understand the development of prolonged grief, with particular focus on how mutually reinforcing relationships among thoughts, emotions, and behaviors can lead some individuals to become “stuck” in a state of prolonged, intense, and impairing grief. Second, we will consider the implications of this framework for controversies around identifying prolonged grief as a mental disorder. Finally, we will consider the prevention and treatment of prolonged grief from a complex systems perspective, with a particular focus on illustrating how changes in some components of the system (e.g., reductions in grief-related avoidance) may permit the natural resolution of intense feelings of grief.

About the Presenter:

Donald Robinaugh, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Psychology and the Department of Art + Design at Northeastern University. He holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from Harvard University, with a focus on Clinical Science and completed his post-doctoral training at Massachusetts General Hospital and at the University of Amsterdam.

Dr. Robinaugh’s work is focused on investigating the complex systems that give rise to mental health challenges, especially those related to prolonged grief disorder. The premise of his work is that mental disorders are massively complex phenomena that arise from a host of interactingbiological, psychological, social, cultural, and environmental factors.

To understand these complex systems, Dr. Robinaugh utilizes a broad set of tools from psychology and systems science, including dynamical systems modeling, network psychometric modeling, and computational phenotyping.
