While the search for medications to treat bereavement-related diagnoses are underway, clinicians and scholars have issued harbingers about research pursuing this line of inquiry, urging the field to consider alternative paths to developing effective approaches for supporting grievers. This webinar will offer a critical examination of the Prolonged Grief Disorder diagnosis and the search for the “treatment” of grief-related distress, redirecting the focus on what grievers say they want and need to feel supported – a sense of connection to a caring social system. Through many decades of science, social support has emerged as an important factor for mitigating human suffering and distress, shown to enhance wellbeing and health in a variety of populations. Conversely, low levels of social support and loneliness are social determinants of poor health outcomes and can adversely affect physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Social support is especially important following experiences of traumatic grief. Yet, we know little about the actors and actions of good clinical and community support in bereavement. Indeed, the ways in which grieving individuals interpret and define social support is not well understood, and little is known about specific behaviors that are perceived as helpful. This webinar will present the results of a study that employed mixed methods and content analysis to assess bereaved individuals’ satisfaction with social support in the context of traumatic grief, using four categories of social support as a framework. Findings suggest that emotional support is the most desired type of support following traumatic loss. Specific strategies will be defined and implications for practice discussed. Finally, an alternative, community-based model will be proposed that focuses on the restorative ethics of sustainability and compassion for those suffering life’s most painful losses.

About the Presenter:

Joanne Cacciatore, PhD, is a Professor at Arizona State University, a Senior Sustainability Scholar, and Director of the Graduate Certificate in Trauma and Bereavement Program. She is in the top 2% of scholars in her field around the world, and has devoted her life to research, practice, and community based care of those suffering traumatic grief. She served on Oprah and Prince Harry’s Mental Health Committee for the Apple TV Series, The Me You Can’t See, which also featured her work at the Selah Carefarm, a therapeutic ecocommunity that combines rescued animals with humans who are grieving the tragic death of a child, parent, partner, or other primary family member. Her research has been published in the Lancet, and other medical journals, and she just released one the Great Courses called Understanding and Coping with Grief with Audible in 2022. Her best selling book, Bearing the Unbearable, has been published in seven languages and is a seminal text in grief courses all over the world.
