Over 18 billion hours of unpaid caregiving are provided to people with dementia in the United States every year. For many, dementia caregiving can be meaningful and purposeful, and for others, the overwhelm, lack of attunement and control, relational shifts, and difficulty integrating ambiguous losses into a typical bereavement process can trigger traumatic responses. Whether baseline traumas are triggered or the nature of caregiving becomes traumatogenic itself, understanding the vulnerabilities and stressors of dementia caregivers can help clinicians intervene. A polyvagal framework as part of trauma-informed healthcare will be described to guide clinicians in assessment and intervention with this vulnerable population.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe how trauma-informed care is applied to work with dementia caregivers.
- Recognize the differences between trauma therapy and trauma-informed care.
- Identify three indications for clinical intervention with dementia caregivers.
