This workshop will describe innovations that have shaped how we educate professionals within the fields of death, dying, and bereavement. There will be an emphasis on both the challenges and the innovations that have influenced what as well as how we teach in thanatology, which in turn guide how we care for dying persons and support bereaved individuals. This workshop will also review novel pedagogical methods, including applied drama approaches and Transformative Learning. Educational initiatives tailored to reach youths as a specific vulnerable population will be explored through a focus on grief camps. Strategies for incorporating considerations related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in death education will also be offered. Overall, this workshop aims to increase awareness of educational innovations as they apply to the field of thanatology.

About the Keynote Presenter:
Charles Corr, PhD, has been a thanatologist, grief educator, and scholar in the field of death, dying, and bereavement since 1975. He is a long-term member of ADEC, the International Work Group (IWG), and the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO). He is currently Senior Editor of NHPCO’s Pediatric e-Journal. Dr. Corr’s publications include 40 books and more than 140 chapters and articles in professional journals. His professional work has been recognized by lifetime achievement awards from both IWG and ADEC.
About the Panelists:
Brie Overton, MA, M.Ed is the Chief Clinical Officer of Experience Camps, a national nonprofit that provides no-fee, clinically informed programs for kids who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling or primary caregiver – as well as resources and advocacy so all grieving children can live a life rich with possibility. Brie received her MA in Thanatology from Hood College, her M.Ed in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from University of Missouri - St. Louis, and is a doctoral candidate in counseling at the University of Missouri - St. Louis. She has spent 17 years in the field of thanatology providing grief education, support, counseling, death education, suicide prevention and intervention, and consultation.
Paul Patinadan, PhD is an Assistant Professor with the Psychology Programme at Nanyang Technological University specializing in health research. He holds a concurrent appointment as an Health Professions Educator with the National Healthcare Group, Singapore. As an interdisciplinary mixed-methods researcher, Dr Patinadan specializes in psychosocial interventions and therapies, the implementation science of such interventions, holistic education across stakeholders in care-ecosystems, and how the medical humanities can be employed for effective and humanistic pedagogy. He has worked on several projects with a focus on clinical outcomes for various illness trajectories, community and critical health psychology, psychosociospiritual wellbeing for patients and their families, and evaluative research for health organizations. These include investigating the health behaviors of the chronically-ill, understanding the role of dignity for individuals at the end of life, facilitating the grieving process for surviving family, and evaluating the Singaporean National Advance Care Planning Programme. Dr Patinadan’s recent work focuses on how grieving individuals employ their shared experiences with food and eating to facilitate their healing process. To date, Dr. Patinadan has participated in multiple international and local conferences, and has been awarded with a number of honors.
Kailey Roberts, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology at Yeshiva University’s Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology and a Consultant Faculty member at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, specializing in bereavement and palliative psychology. Dr. Roberts is currently leading research projects on bereavement risk screening, perinatal loss, and bereavement in chosen families and is a collaborator on numerous studies related to Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy, supporting bereaved parents, palliative care in the LGBTQIA+ community, and geropsychology training. Cutting across her research is an investment in using qualitative methods and implementing stakeholder feedback to optimize interventions for diverse psychosocial needs and sociocultural contexts. Additionally, Dr. Roberts is a dedicated educator, facilitating workshops on grief and bereavement and Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy to various institutions and mentoring students. At Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology she developed and teaches courses on Multicultural and Diversity Topics in Psychology and LGBTQIA+ Affirming Psychotherapy and is Co-Chair of the program’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee. In addition to her research and teaching pursuits, Dr. Roberts maintains a clinical practice working with caregivers and bereaved individuals.About the Moderator:
Evgenia (Jane) Milman, PhD, is a postdoctoral fellow funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research in a joint position with Dr. Wendy Lichtenthal at the Center for the Advancement of Bereavement Care at the University of Miami Health System and the Psychology Department at Western University. Dr. Milman is also a Research Fellow at the MacDonald Franklin Operational Stress Injury Research Center. Dr. Milman previously completed a fellowship funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. Dr. Milman publishes research examining how making meaning of difficult life experiences influences mental health following grief, trauma and other stressful events. She has authored dozens of research publications as well as book chapters on grief and grief therapy, most recently collaborating with Drs. Edith Steffen and Robert Neimeyer to develop the Handbook of Grief Therapies for Sage Publications. Dr. Milman also actively practices psychology, is a content expert and writer for the Canadian Virtual Hospice and is honored to serve on the advisory board for TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors).
