This webinar will describe work conducted with mental health professionals in Ukraine, which includes a grief camp for children in the midst of war, Ukrainian children’s artwork, and youngsters’ voices sharing their experience of ongoing conflict. The webinar will offer tools for professionals working with youths and caring adults to support youths’ through their experience of grief and trauma. A foundation will be created for understanding the challenges bereaved young people carry with them, often unexpressed due to limited avenues for safe and supportive sharing. Techniques will be described for giving youths the sense that they are protected and understood through their journey of grief and trauma.

Learning Objectives:

1. At the completion of this presentation, participants will be able to identify vocabulary related to youth grief and trauma.
2. At the completion of this presentation, participants will be able to describe practical ways to engage children and older youth to help them express their grief and trauma experience.
3. At the completion of this presentation, participants will be able to recognize resources available to young people (books and non-profits) on grief and trauma.

About the Presenter:

Linda Goldman, MS, FT has a Fellow in Thanatology, MS degree in counseling, master’s equivalency in early childhood education, and is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. For almost twenty years, she worked as a teacher and counselor in the Maryland public school system, and as grief therapist with children, teenagers, and adults. She was named by the Washingtonian Magazine as one of the top therapists in the Maryland, Virginia, District of Columbia area 1998 and again named by the Washingtonian Magazine as a therapist to go to after the terrorist attacks in 2001.

Linda Goldman's extensive teaching about children's grief includes the Graduate Program of Counseling at Johns Hopkins University; Kings College Ontario, Canada; University of Maryland, School of Social Work's Advanced Certification Program for Children and Adolescents; Pennsylvania State, Buffalo School of Social Work; University of North Carolina; The National Transportation Safety Board; the Child Welfare Administration; The University of Hong Kong; The National Changhua University of Education in Taiwan; mental health workers tending children's grief in Ukraine (2023); and much more.

Linda's treasure trove of authoring addresses timely, tough topics of children/teen/parent grief with suicide, bullying, school shootings, grief complications for children, pet loss, war, LGBT youth and children's grief, climate change, COVID, and refugees of war. Many of her writings have been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Czech, and Ukrainian (in press, 2023).

In frequent demand for her expertise, Linda has consulted for and contributed to the National Head Start Program, National Geographic, Sesame Street, and the Public Broadcasting System. She was a significant part of the Washington Post's article, How To Talk to Kids about Suicide. Linda Goldman has been interviewed for articles by USA Today, The New York Times, LA Times, The Boston Globe, The Wall Street Journal, the Associated Press, Seventeen Magazine, ABC News, US Magazine, The Huffington Post, the Washington Post, the Baltimore Sun, the Atlantic, and the Ukrainian Newspaper HB “How to help a child with losses caused by the war (2022).”

An avid ADEC leader, Linda was awarded ADEC's Clinical Practice Award (2003), has served on ADEC’s Board of Directors, and participated in numerous teaching and writing initiatives, including ADEC's 2022 Half-Day Virtual Workshop, "Children and Grief." Her leadership extends to the Advisory Board for Suicide Prevention Education Awareness for Kids (SPEAK), RAINBOWS for Our Children, and the Academic Advisory Board of Annual Editions/Death, Dying and Bereavement/ McGraw Hill. Currently, she serves on the Advisory Board for TAPS, the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors of the Military.

Especially relevant to this webinar, Linda Goldman is the recipient of the “The Tenth Global Concern of Human Life Award, 2007.” Always on the forefront of current issues, her new book is Climate Change and Youth: Turning Grief and Anxiety into Activism (2022). Additionally, she wrote a chapter on climate change, youth, and traumatic grief in the International Handbook of Child and Adolescent Losses in Contemporary Context, published by Routledge (in-press 2023).
