In the night, grief speaks through dreams. Grief dreams can be symbolic or experienced as literal after-death communications, surfacing unresolved feelings, offering comfort, or revealing truths that might otherwise be resisted. However, in a culture that de-mythologizes experiences, dreams are often dismissed or judged. Thus, clients hesitate to share their dreams and clinicians may feel uncertain about how to explore dream material. Grounded in a psychodynamic, Jungian framework, this presentation offers tools for working with the symbolic language of dreams to support grievers in connecting with the deceased, renewing self-understanding, making meaning, and reweaving the threads of love and loss.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify sociocultural attitudes toward dreams that may shape a client’s openness to sharing dream material.
2. Recognize the functions of dreams in grief and the symbolic negotiation of loss.
3. Describe therapeutic techniques for engaging grief dreams in the clinical setting.

About the Presenter:

Mark Shelvock, MACP, MA, is a Jungian-oriented psychotherapist and Certified Thanatologist who maintains a private clinical practice in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. His work focuses on trauma-responsive healing, attachment-informed grief counselling, and depth psychotherapy that honours the psyche’s capacity for transformation. He also teaches in the Grief Education Program at OISE, University of Toronto. With two advanced graduate degrees and over a decade of study, Mark specializes in human development and the challenges that shape—or rupture—it. Mark also writes regularly for Psychology Today, exploring topics such as traumatic bereavement, non-death grief, identity shifts, after-death communication experiences, engaging with mystery, and the value of dreams. His writing invites both the public and clinicians into a more felt-sense innerstanding of post-traumatic growth.

Mark is currently developing a collaborative Substack platform with Dr. Karima Joy, centered on how pain and loss can become portals for transformation for the public.
